1. Sun-god
Marduk the wisest, the sage of the gods
Was born from the womb of the elder blood
Goddesses reared him and filled him with force
He grew up – impressive and tall
Strong was his body and strong was his mind
His power was truly remarkable
Four pair of eyes, also four pair of ears
And fire shot forth from his mouth
Praised by the younger gods
Praised for his temper
You’re the greatest of all
You are all of the great
You’re the great lord of cardinal winds
You’re a son of the gods
You’re a god of the sun
You’re the Sun-god – the mari-utu
Marduk created a great heavy storm
And woke up the old mother Tiamat
Badly disturbed by the violent waves
She flew into terrible rage
Cursed by the ancient gods
Cursed for his temper
CHORUS
CHORUS
2. King of Gods
After the glorious battle
Where Marduk destroyed Tiamat
He split her body into several parts
And created Earth and Heaven
Next came celestial bodies:
The sun and the moon and the stars
All he designed in an everlasting
Circle of the year
All the gods were stunned
By his splendid majesty
And so, they started praising
Hail, king of gods
Marduk the creator
Hail, king of gods
No one will be greater
Hail, king of gods
Reinforce and guide us
Hail, king of gods
Praise the new and holy king
“Bring me this devilish traitor
Qingu will pay for his deeds
Out of his blood we’ll create the first men
To impose on them our burden”
After creation of mankind
Marduk took rest from his work
He settled down in his “Esagil”
In holy Babylon
CHORUS
These were the tales of Marduk’s rise
And how he built his great kingdom
Spread all the tales into the world
Spread all the tales until the end of time
CHORUS
3. Aeon Gods
In a time without a name, long before mankind
There happened a great battle of the gods
Marduk and his followers they were well prepared
To fight against the army of Tiamat
AEON GODS
Marduk ruled the elements – weapons of a god
His seven winds created a great storm
He assembled all his troops – ready to attack
And marched against the evil Tiamat
When she saw it coming – an army of the gods
She cursed her crawling counsellors in anger
When the battle troops unite
At early morning light
We raise our golden banners
And stand up for the fight
See the lightning in the sky
Hear the thunder of the storm
Cause we fight as AEON GODS
The campaign went back and forth – no one could prevail
So, the final fight was imminent
Marduk blew the Evil Wind straight against Tiamat
And killed her with an arrow through her heart
The enemies surrendered and begged to save their lives
The victory of Marduk raised his glory
CHORUS
CHORUS
4. Babylon Burning
“My holy powers lost their might
I need to rest for a hundred nights”
So Marduk called for a fair deputy
And Erra offered to assume control
“Let me take over all your reign
I will take care of your domain”
The god of war betrayed the king of gods
And turned against the holy Babylon
Burning – all is burning
Fire and chaos around
Burning – all is burning
Babylon blazed to the ground
“Hundreds of years I have lived in peace
Now I am thirsty for blood
I will not spare humankind
And devastate each of their kind”
Ereshkigal tried to calm Erra’s rage
But she could not prevent the god from…
CHORUS
“Blind with rage I killed them all
The good and bad alike
I realize the misery
That caused my raging strike”
Burning – all was burning
Bright is the future ahead
Burning – all was burning
Babylon rose from the dead
5. Enlil’s Command (The Flood pt. I)
Centuries after mankind came to light
Countless man filled the earth
Enlil the high god grew restless at night
And his temper turned into anger
The noise of mankind has disrupted my sleep
Why have they grown so large
Humans are nothing but clamorous sheep
We will end their insane existence
A solution is close at hand
It is mine to restore our order
I will give you one last command
To annihilate all mankind
First, I will hold back the annual rain
And dry out their fertile land
Once all the humans are starving in pain
I will send out a mortal fever
CHORUS
Resistant was the human blood
Towards the relentless, deadly plagues
Enlil, mercy, mercy
Enlil save us all
Finally, I’ll create a flood
To bring back peace for our sake
CHORUS
6. Nintu’s Lament (The Flood pt. II)
Darkness hid the daylight when the flood began
Meant to seal the fate of every man
All the gods were frightened by the awful doom
So, they ran for shelter in the Goddess’ womb
In Nintu’s eyes
All sorrow lies
And endless pain
When the daylight awakened
All my children had died
Washed away by the flood
I am stained by their blood!
I can’t stop to weep and to cry!
How could our hearts turn into solid stone?
Now we have to bear the blame all alone
How can I continue when my tears have dried?
Walk around the wasteland where my children died?
CHORUS
What have I done?
There is no one
To end this pain
I am bound to their fate
I will carry this weight
In the name of the fallen ones
CHORUS
After days of deep mourning
A big ark came in sight
They survived the great flood
And preserved human blood
There is hope
The hope for a new life
7. Enki’s Grace (The Flood pt. III)
In the blink of an eye
He sentenced to die the whole mankind
But I will not support Enlil’s command
My loyal servants, be aware
And so, the waters rising higher
All living beings are left behind
The human fate is lost and dire
But I will save the humankind
Go and built a great boat
To save all your kin and all living things
Be prepared for the flood to last seven days
Until you’ll reach your future home
CHORUS
Enlil – calm down, I have a plan
To limit man’s existence
Mortality and deadly disease
Will be human’s fate henceforth
The waters stopped rising higher
All can return into their place
The human fate was lost and dire
But has been saved by Enki’s grace
The waters stopped rising higher
Enki has saved the humankind
This is the covenant between the gods and men
8. The Descent
Once the goddess Ishtar went to the underworld
And entered the dark kingdom of her sister
Ishtar tried to trick her and steal the ruler’s throne
But she failed and was enslaved
“Pride goes right before the fall
Now you have to face it all
You will not escape my deadly kingdom”
Take her down
To my land of the darkness
Take her down
To eternal damnation
Take her down
In Ishtar’s longer absence fertility decreased
And so, the gods gave order to release her
But the law required to send a deputy
So, they choose the god Tammuz
“Queen and goddess of the dead
Hear my plea: take me instead”
Desperate words of his beloved sister
Take me down
To the land of the darkness
Take me down
To eternal damnation
Take me down
Take him down – No!
Take her down – No!
Take both down
To the land of the darkness
Take ‘em down – Yeah!
To eternal damnation
Take ‘em down
To the land of the darkness
Take ‘em down
Alternating the time of damnation
Take ‘em down
9. Monsters of Tiamat
Here are the monsters
A war was drawing near
The gods were full of fear
So, they created demon monsters
A pair of giant snakes
Sharp teeth is all it takes
Their bodies filled with deadly venom
Eleven creatures, cruel and merciless
Here are the monsters of Tiamat
Here are the fighters for elder blood
The Scorpion’s deadly sting
The Hydra’s mighty wings
The savage dog, a bull and dragons
The Gods – without remorse
Raised up their battle force
They chose Qingu as commander
“Our monster troops will crush the enemies”
CHORUS
Here are the monsters
CHORUS
10. Tablet of Destinies
In times of the dawn the council of gods
Had named the lord of the cosmos
An item was made for Enlil’s command
To bring unlimited force
Anzu the demon storm-bird was born
With wings and the head of a lion
Engaged to protect the lord of gods
He snatched the Tablet of Destinies
By the hands of a betrayer
Enlil lost his sacred gift
Who will be the demon slayer
And return the Tablet of Destinies
Several gods refused to attack
The mighty, invincible Anzu
So, they beseeched the mother of gods
To bear a powerful hero-god
CHORUS
In wild, destructive battle
No one had gained control
But finally, Ninurta
Could kill the Anzu bird
By the hands of a betrayer
Enlil lost his sacred gift
But Ninurta was the slayer
And returned the Tablet of Destinies
